A Layered History

This is one of the three rooms original to the home. While it is unknown how the Van Zandt family used this room, the 1936 restoration envisioned it as a parlor and is still interpreted through that lens today. Throughout its history, the Cottage experienced several renovations and repairs that reflected the tools and tastes of the time. In 2016, portions of the original wall were covered by clear polycarbonate plastic to give you a glimpse into the building’s past. These included:

Square cut nails
Different layers and styles of wallpaper
Newspaper patches, ca. 1890s
Tin wall patches
Lithograph of girl and dog
